Carnelian - A Warm and Comforting Embrace

Carnelian BraceletCarnelian is a part of the Chalcedony group of the Quartz family. This stone ranges in color from a translucent yellow-orange to reddish-brown to a deep red. The red color in Carnelian is caused by impurities of Hematite (Iron Oxide) and is enhanced by exposure to the sun.

The image I chose serves as a perfect example of the lovely range in color in these stones as all of the stones used to make this bracelet are Carnelian.

Most Carnelian on the market is mined in India, Brazil and Arabia. Some of the oldest, and finest, Carnelian deposits can be found in the Bengal, Deccan, and Ratnapur regions of India.

History and Lore: Carnelian has long been thought to bring good luck and protection. Talismans and beads dating back as far as 1500 BC have been found in Egyptian tombs. The Ancient Egyptians placed symbols carved of Carnelian at the neck of a mummy to ensure safe passage, protection and the rebirth of the spirit in the afterlife.

Carnelian has also been believed by many civilizations throughout history to protect against the evil eye and to stop the flow of blood.

About Carnelian, Goethe wrote:

"Carnelian is a talisman,

It brings good luck to child and man;

If resting on an onyx ground,

A sacred kiss imprint when found.

It drives away all evil things;

To thee and thine protection brings.

The name of Allah, king of kings,

If graven on this stone, indeed,

Will move to love and doughty need.

From such a gem a woman gains

Sweet hope and comfort in her pains"

Healing Properties: Considered a stone of courage, passion, creativity and ambition, Carnelian is said to help improve self-esteem, confidence and motivation. It also thought to enhance physical energy and strength, stimulate curiosity and emotions, and heighten sensuality and sexuality. It is also believed to be a strong protector against anger, envy and resentment and that it repels negativity and relieves sorrow and depression.

Physically, Carnelian is thought to aid in the treatment of blood disorders, kidney stones, infertility, asthma, arthritis and blood pressure.

In women it is also believed to help relieve menstrual problems (such as cramping).
Care: Carnelian is a fairly hard stone (7 on the Mohs hardness scale), so other than the "usual" precautions (keep away from harsh chemicals and strenuous physical activity) no special care is needed.
Interesting Facts:

  • Carnelian is an alternate birthstone for the month of July and the astrological sign of Virgo
  • Mohammed, Napoleon I, and Napoleon III wore carnelian
  • Carnelian is placed in the sun to change brown tints to red
